Abandoning the race

Please ensure that you inform a race official if abandoning the race. This is to ensure that no time is wasted looking for you and we can ensure that everyone is safe.
Remember to return your timing chip and number.

Support vehicles

Support vehicles can provide water and assistance to reach the finish in case a rider is unable to continue.
  • The support car stays with the bunch. If you are dropped you can get help from the car in the group behind.
  • The “broom wagon” follows the last rider in the race
  • You take assistance from a moving vehicle at your own risk. Ask the driver to stop if necessary.
  • You must drop back to receive assistance. Support cars must remain behind the bunch.
RULES REGARDING USE OF SUPPORT VEHICLES IN BUNCH RACES
  • After stopping for a mechanical problem, support vehicles are allowed to provide a draft for you to return to the back of the main bunch.
  • You are not allowed to hold the vehicle or have any contact with the vehicle's occupant(s) e.g. a 'sticky bottle'
  • You may not receive a draft inside the final 20km.
  • You are not allowed to receive draft assistance if you have been dropped.
  • You are not allowed to ride in the vehicle and then rejoin the race.

Mechanical assistance

  • Mechanical assistance provided by Rasen Sport and QCTF
  • Each race will be supported by one mechanic who will stay behind the main bunch
  • Support cars will be supplied with one spare set of Shimano 11 speed wheels
  • If you want to guarantee a spare wheel being available to you, or require 10 speed or Campagnolo, provide your support car with your own (clearly labelled) wheels.

HAVE A SAFE RACE
What makes racing thrilling brings inherent risks. Falls can happen but are not inevitable. Everyone can contribute to a safe race. Here's how.
  • Call or signal hazards
  • Overlapping your front wheel with the rear wheel ahead is a big no-no. If that rider changes line and clips your wheel, you will fall, possibly bringing down others behind and it will be your fault.
  • Don't suddenly brake, change direction or jump onto another rider's slip stream without checking it is safe to do so.  Leave the barging to the pros - they have the bike handling skills and experience. They also have the scars to prove it!
  • In the shelter of the pack, you'll be riding at higher speed than you are used to. The bunch will go into a turn or roundabout faster than you might normally attempt. At this point, braking, or failing to 'hold your line' is particularly hazardous so you should practice:
  • Get on the drops before the turn to keep centre of gravity low
  • Press your body weight down on the bar on the left side when turning left and vice versa for right
  • Look ahead to where you want the bike to go
TIPS
  • Being at the back isn’t the best or safest place to be – this is where you’ll feel the greatest effect as the bunch accelerates and stretches out then slows and squashes back together.
  • Anticipate! Look towards the front of the group not only at the rider in front of you.
  • Relax! Things can be more edgy in a race but if you relax you can take them in your stride.
  • If the race finishes with a bunch sprint, hold your speed and your line and if you don’t feel confident then don’t sprint. But don’t slam on the brakes either!
  • If you need help or advice, you’ll probably find the registration team too busy. Ask the experienced riders – you’ll find our cycling community eager to be of assistance.
